The Naked Truth
For hours, I've been here trying to write the *bee's knees* of "about us" pages, trolling the web for templates & inspiration. Then it hit me! Who needs a template? Why pretend? That's not us, nor the business we want to be. We're here to stand out, give honesty & integrity, be transparent! That's what people are looking for and that is not so easy to find these days, in our *pint-sized* opinion. So here-we-go..
Our son has battled with acne his entire life. Through the years, we have tried product after product, dollars after dollars and the only thing that was consistent, is the harsh chemicals and failed results. I found myself in the ever-so-tricky rabbit-hole of internet click-click-click...link-link-link and every new page was more bland and useless as the one before. Next thing you know I'm watching YouTube videos and I stumbled upon this amazing lady making soap. I was freaking captivated! I spent the rest of the night watching every video she had ever posted. And so it began...
I spent the next week watching endless loops of soap making videos, subscribing to every soap making newsletter, learning about oils and butters, their unique properties and how they react when "mixed" with one another. Within a few short weeks, I was placing my first order of soap making ingredients.
Now, I wouldn't say my first batch of soap was an epic fail per se, but you won't find it for sale either!
I quickly learned a very costly lesson! I discovered just how clueless I was when it came to ordering ingredients - boy was I off the mark! Nonetheless, I kept going. I found two women who are total wizards at making soaps and masks, body scrubs, lotion(s), and things I have never heard of -- such as salt bars! I detailed my notes, hung on their every utterance, and kept barreling onward! That's when I heard three words that changed everything. "Goat's milk soap". HUH? Oh yes, it's a thing! It's a BIG thing!
I mean it when I tell you that I put in hundreds of hours toilin' and explorin' 'til I was ready to order up more ingredients. I managed to source out a local goat farmer, grabbed me a gallon o' fresh goats milk, and formulated an amazing recipe.
My first batch was a success - it was beautiful and I was so proud of myself! But, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t start worrying. What if my potion is bad? What if someone somehow gets hurt? What if it just plain ol’ sucks? The only thing I knew to do was give my friend and my daughter a mountain of samples to hand out. I was confident the formula would leave everyone’s skin feeling great. But I wanted true and unbiased feedback from people with problem-prone skin. Within that same week, I got the news I was hoping for. It was working, people were loving it, and they wanted to know where to buy more! So onward I go!
Sure, my feeble attempts at crafting those cutesy, twirl-tastic designs I saw on YouTube weren't half bad - but I was far from satisfied. I was actually too embarrassed to put our name on them! I kept thinking, "Why am I wasting my time trying to make soap like everyone else? Think about it, when's the last time your friend excitedly yelled, 'OMG step into my bathroom and gaze upon this gorgeous swirly soap I bought!'?" I just turned 50 in April and I'm pretty sure that never happened, not in my lifetime.
But, it wasn't until I got a text from my son that I knew we were on to something spectacular. He sent a picture of himself and the happiness in his eyes was all I needed to see. His handsome face just glowing and his self-confidence finally emerging. After 30 years, he is learning what self-esteem feels like and it is a beautiful blossoming that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
We can not legally ramble on and make claims that our soaps are miracle potions and we have found a cure for acne or blemishes or any other problem-skin issues. The only claims we can stake are the results we have witnessed for ourselves. This voyage we are on has not been free. It has not been without expensive failures. Therefore, if we weren't confident and willing to stand behind our soaps, what would be the point of trying to get our name out there in world with a massive cornucopia of soap makers who are armed with years of experience and skills that we will never master? And quite frankly, we don't want to. Our mission is to provide a single product that offers both indulgence and benefit, eliminating the need for multiple products that lack results.
As of today, we are proud and stand behind our soap potions and give mention to their benefits. We're not afraid to admit we have a lot to learn. But we're on a journey and hope you come along for the ride. If we mess up, tell us, we will do our best to make it right. You work hard for your money and we promise to never take that for granted!
Best wishes to you all,
Melissa and Richard
